  5.     After the Supreme Court ruled last summer that laws banning
  6. flag desecration were unconstitutional infringements on freedom
  7. of expression, Congress rushed to appease indignant voters with
  8. a new Flag Protection Act. George Bush and many congressional
  9. Republicans insisted, however, that nothing less than a
  10. constitutional amendment could provide real protection for the
  11. colors. Last week a federal judge in Seattle proved them right.

  13.     In a case involving four protesters who set a flag afire in
  14. front of the Seattle Post Office, U.S. District Judge Barbara
  15. Rothstein found the Flag Protection Act invalid. Rothstein
  16. ruled, "Burning the flag as an expression of political dissent
  17. . . . does not jeopardize the freedom which we hold dear." Her
  18. decision is headed for the nine Justices: the flag law provides
  19. for expedited appeal to the Supreme Court, which could hear the
  20. case as early as May.
